In my last column I focused on the kitchen's preliminary design phase, including where to ideally
position appliances, storage space, trash receptacles, and dishwashers etc. to ensure proper functionality. Now
that we have successfully implemented the art of designing the kitchen to function properly with "Everything in
its Place," the next focus of consideration is the practicality of form, or "Form Follows Function."
I have the distinct pleasure of working as a personal chef to an elite athlete and his family in a truly amazing,
well-designed kitchen that epitomizes the idea of form following function. This kitchen is not only elegantly designed but
delivers functionality through form in every way. I have regularly put this kitchen to the test by preparing everything from
intimate family dinners to large birthday celebrations and even sporting events, making it perfect for the Entertainer's Dream.
As an example, the kitchen I work in features traditional design elements found throughout and the
ease of function is apparent at first sight. The kitchen is
equipped with strategically placed upright and under counter
refrigeration units and designated dry, hot and cold storage
throughout the large space so that the natural function
allows coexistence with the family in a nonintrusive manner.
The T-shaped island with granite marble counter top is located in the center of the expansive kitchen and functions
as an integral work space but also acts as a central meeting space for all to enjoy, whether involved in the culinary
process or simply taking in the views of the pool and outdoor courtyard areas.
The traditional design essentials continue into the adjacent butler's pantry and flow outside to the
veranda, featuring an expansive grilling and dining area. The butler's pantry is steps away from the indoor and
outdoor kitchen areas and provides a full service work station with an additional dishwasher, full size refrigerator,
and separate enclosed trash area. With the butler's pantry connecting the inside and out, it is easy to consider the
outdoor area a continuation of the main kitchen with additional work areas, refrigeration and a warming drawer.
The inclusion of an extra outdoor kitchen, work space and storage make this ideal entertaining in the indoor/
outdoor living that the beautiful Colorado weather permits nearly year-round.
As a personal Chef, it is refreshing to find a work space that had so much thought put into the design
process as to the actual form and function of a kitchen built for entertaining. I hope to inspire you to ensure form follows function in your own home cooking spaces.
